They came for the girl the next morning at breakfast, Olga and two other guards.

“So, I’m a bitch, eh?” Olga said loudly.

Chatter died off as everybody watched.

The girl stared up from her spot at the table wide-eyed and scared.

“No, I never . . .”

Olga punched her in the throat, knocking her out of the seat.

“Silence!”

The other two reached down and grabbed the girl. They dragged her out of the cafeteria, following right behind Olga.

“That woman can throw a punch,” Avra said after swallowing a bite of reconstituted eggs.

Kelsie nodded without looking at her, watching the guards as they continued down the hall.

This answered the question as to the sensor’s range, she thought. Either that, or we have informants among us. That’s old school surveillance, using human informants, but it works just as good.

“I mean, you can tell she’s been trained,” Avra continued. “Most people, well most women anyway, would just throw a roundhouse punch. Or a slap. Impactful, but not powerful. You have to be trained to punch like that, in a straight line and putting your weight behind it.”

Kelsie turned back around and forced some more food in her mouth. She ate without tasting the bland food.

After a few more bites she said, “I suppose all the guards have been trained how to fight. It makes sense.”

Avra shrugged and said, “Guards for prisoners, maybe.”

But she left it at that. No one wanted to say much after the public removal of the printer operator.

And perhaps that’s the point, Kelsie thought. Heck, the whole thing could have been staged to put fear in everyone.

Someone else was found to help the girl operating the printer, and the day began much as the previous one had.

Late in the morning shift, Olga returned. She patrolled up and down the line, pausing to berate someone on occasion. Just before lunch, she stopped and watched Kelsie and Avra at the trigger mechanisms station.

“Oh, you’ve done so well, ladies.”

Kelsie glanced up, surprised to hear praise coming from this ugly woman.

Olga smiled at her when their eyes met, and reached out to pat her on the shoulder.

“If you need anything, you come see Olga. Hm?”

She gave Kelsie a toothless smile, eyes alight.

“Uh . . . Okay?”

Olga squeezed the shoulder before moving downline to the next station. Here, one of the workers faltered upon seeing her, dropping her wrench. Olga yelled at her, waving the cattle prod in a threatening manner.

Kelsie gave a Avra a bewildered look.

“What was that all about?”

Avra smiled, setting down her screwdriver.

“It would appear, my friend, that Ms. Olga is an honorary citizen of the ancient Isle of Lesbos.”

“Oh.”

A few moments later, Kelsie got it.

“Oh! I really am slow today. But that’s . . . that’s illegal.”

Avra gave Kelsie a look that conveyed a wealth of emotion.

She shrugged said, “Some rules do not apply to certain people, you know.”

Even saying that out loud was a risk, Kelsie knew. She felt a little surprised that Avra went there.

But it was a simple statement of fact. Some
